California State University, Fresno (commonly referred to as Fresno State) is a public research university and one of 23 campuses within the California State University system. It is located at the northeast edge of Fresno, California, approximately from the entrance to Yosemite National Park, and sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the San Joaquin Valley. The city of Fresno is the fifth largest city in California. The university is within an hour's drive of many mountain and lake resorts and within a three-hour drive of both Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Fresno State Bulldogs represent California State University, Fresno (commonly referred to as Fresno State) in 20 NCAA Division I sports. The teams are members of the Mountain West Conference. Before that, it had been a member of the Western Athletic Conference since the 1992–93 before leaving for the Mountain West during the 2012–13 season. Fresno State had also been a member of the Big West Conference since the 1969–70 (the conference was known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association at that time until 1988).
