Ireland, also known as the Republic of Ireland ('), is a sovereign state in north-western Europe occupying about five-sixths of the island of Ireland.

The capital and largest city is Dublin, which is located on the eastern part of the island, and whose metropolitan area is home to around a third of the country's 4.75 million inhabitants.

The state shares its only land border with Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom.

It is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the Celtic Sea to the south, Saint George's Channel to the south-east, and the Irish Sea to the east.

It is a unitary, parliamentary republic.

The legislature, the ', consists of a lower house, ', an upper house, ', and an elected President (') who serves as the largely ceremonial head of state, but with some important powers and duties.

The head of government is the ' (Prime Minister, literally 'Chief', a title not used in English), who is elected by the Dáil and appointed by the President; the Taoiseach in turn appoints other government ministers.

Public health refers to "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting human health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis.

The population in question can be as small as a handful of people, or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic).

The dimensions of health can encompass "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity," as defined by the United Nations' World Health Organization.

Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services.

Environmental health, community health, behavioral health, health economics, public policy, mental health and occupational safety and health are other important subfields.

Employees work in return for payment, which may be in the form of an hourly wage, by piecework or an annual salary, depending on the type of work an employee does or which sector she or he is working in.

Employees in some fields or sectors may receive gratuities, bonus payment or stock options.

It is the body responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare, and for research into occupational risks in England and Wales and Scotland.

Responsibility in Northern Ireland lies with the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland.

The HSE was created by the Health and Safety at Work etc.

Act 1974, and has since absorbed earlier regulatory bodies such as the Factory Inspectorate and the Railway Inspectorate though the Railway Inspectorate was transferred to the Office of Rail Regulation in April 2006.

The HSE is sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions.

As part of its work HSE investigates industrial accidents, small and large, including major incidents such as the explosion and fire at Buncefield in 2019.

Though it formerly reported to the Health and Safety Commission, on 1 April 2008, the two bodies merged.

Health Service Executive Confidence: 70% Arrow up

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is responsible for the provision of health and personal social services for everyone living in Ireland, with public funds.

The Executive was established by the Health Act, 2004 and came into official operation on 1 January 2005.

It replaces the ten regional Health Boards, the Eastern Regional Health Authority and a number of other different agencies and organisations.

The Minister for Health has overall responsibility for the Executive in Government.

The HSE is Ireland's largest employer with over 67,000 direct employees, and another 40,000 in funded health care organisations.

It has an annual budget of over €13 billion, more than any other public sector organisation.

In March 2017 it was announced that the HSE would be scrapped and the country would return to the previous system now branded as Hospital Groups and Community Health Organisations.
