Labor Notes is a non-profit organization and network for union members and grassroots labor activists.

Though officially titled the Labor Education and Research Project, the project is best known by the title of its monthly magazine.

The magazine reports news and analysis about labor activity or problems facing the labor movement.

In its pages it advocates for a revitalization of the labor movement through Social Movement Unionism and union democracy.

Labor Notes is based out of Detroit, Michigan with an East Coast office located in Brooklyn, New York.

Worker centers are non-profit community-based mediating organizations that organize and provide support to communities of low wage workers who are not already members of a collective bargaining organization (such as a trade union) or have been legally excluded from coverage by U.S. labor laws.

Many worker centers in the United States focus on immigrant and low-wage workers in sectors such as restaurant, construction, day labor and agriculture.

The Labour movement or Labor movement (see spelling differences), or, respectively, labourism or laboriousm, are general terms for the collective organization of working people developed to represent and campaign for better working conditions and treatment from their employers and, by the implementation of labour and employment laws, their governments.

The standard unit of organization is the trade union.

A local union, often shortened to local, in North America, or a union branch (known as a lodge in some unions) in the United Kingdom and other countries, is a locally based trade union organisation which forms part of a larger (usually national) union.

A trade union (BritishAustralianNew ZealandSouth African / Caribbean English; also trades union), labour union (Canadian), or labor union (American) is an organization of workers who have come together to achieve common goals such as protecting the integrity of its trade, improving safety standards, achieving higher pay and benefits such as health care and retirement, increasing the number of employees an employer assigns to complete the work, and better working conditions.

The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members ( members) and negotiates labour contracts (collective bargaining) with employers.

The most common purpose of these associations or unions is "maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment".

This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies.
