International law is the set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and between nations.

It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations.

International law differs from state-based legal systems in that it is primarily applicable to countries rather than to private citizens.

National law may become international law when treaties delegate national jurisdiction to supranational tribunals such as the European Court of Human Rights or the International Criminal Court.

Treaties such as the Geneva Conventions may require national law to conform to respective parts.

The contemporary legal systems of the world are generally based on one of four basic systems: civil law, common law, statutory law, religious law or combinations of these.

However, the legal system of each country is shaped by its unique history and so incorporates individual variations.

From a sociological perspective, social norms are informal understandings that govern the behavior of members of a society.

Social psychology recognizes smaller group units, such as a team or an office, may also endorse norms separately or in addition to cultural or societal expectations.

In other words, norms are regarded as collective representations of acceptable group conduct as well as individual perceptions of particular group conduct.

They can be viewed as cultural products (including values, customs, and traditions) which represent individuals' basic knowledge of what others do and think that they should do.

In ethics, value denotes the degree of importance of some thing or action, with the aim of determining what actions are best to do or what way is best to live (normative ethics), or to describe the significance of different actions (axiology).

It may be described as treating actions themselves as abstract objects, putting value to them.

It deals with right conduct and good life, in the sense that a highly, or at least relatively highly, valuable action may be regarded as ethically "good" (adjective sense), and an action of low in value, or somewhat relatively low in value, may be regarded as "bad".

What makes an action valuable may in turn depend on the ethic values of the objects it increases, decreases or alters.

An object with "ethic value" may be termed an "ethic or philosophic good" (noun sense).
