Multiculturalism is the existence of multiple cultural traditions within a single country, usually considered in terms of the culture associated with an aboriginal ethnic group and foreigner ethnic groups.

This can happen when a jurisdiction is created or expanded by amalgamating areas with two or more different cultures (e.g. French Canada and English Canada) or through immigration from different jurisdictions around the world (e.g. United States, Australia, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and many other countries).

In the social sciences, a social group has been defined as two or more people who interact with one another, share similar characteristics, and collectively have a sense of unity.

Other theorists disagree however, and are wary of definitions which stress the importance of interdependence or objective similarity.

Instead, researchers within the social identity tradition generally define it as "a group is defined in terms of those who identify themselves as members of the group".

Regardless, social groups come in a myriad of sizes and varieties.

For example, a society can be viewed as a large social group.

In a support group, members provide each other with various types of help, usually nonprofessional and nonmaterial, for a particular shared, usually burdensome, characteristic.

Members with the same issues can come together for sharing coping strategies, to feel more empowered and for a sense of community.

The help may take the form of providing and evaluating relevant information, relating personal experiences, listening to and accepting others' experiences, providing sympathetic understanding and establishing social networks.

A support group may also work to inform the public or engage in advocacy.
