The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan American "fact tank", which is based in Washington, D.C. It provides information on social issues, public opinion, and demographic trends shaping the United States and the world.

It also conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis, and other empirical social science research.

Pew Research Center does not take explicit policy positions, and is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Content analysis is "a wide and heterogeneous set of manual or computer-assisted techniques for contextualized interpretations of documents produced by communication processes in the strict sense of that phrase (any kind of text, written, iconic, multimedia, etc) or signification processes (traces and artifacts), having as ultimate goal the production of valid and trustworthy inferences".

Social science is a major category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society.

It in turn has many branches, each of which is considered a "social science".

The main social sciences include economics, political science, human geography, demography, psychology, and sociology.

In a wider sense, social science also includes some fields in the humanities such as anthropology, archaeology, jurisprudence, history, and linguistics.

The term is also sometimes used to refer specifically to the field of sociology, the original 'science of society', established in the 19th century.

An opinion poll, sometimes simply referred to as a poll, is a human research survey of public opinion from a particular sample.

Opinion polls are usually designed to represent the opinions of a population by conducting a series of questions and then extrapolating generalities in ratio or within confidence intervals.

A policy is a deliberate system of principles to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes.

A policy is a statement of intent, and is implemented as a procedure or protocol.

Policies are generally adopted by the Board of or senior governance body within an organization where as procedures or protocols would be developed and adopted by senior executive officers.

Policies can assist in both subjective and objective decision making.

Policies to assist in subjective decision making would usually assist senior management with decisions that must consider the relative merits of a number of factors before making decisions and as a result are often hard to objectively test e.g. work-life balance policy.

In contrast policies to assist in objective decision making are usually operational in nature and can be objectively tested e.g. password policy.
