Economics (UK English,; US English) is "a social science concerned chiefly with description and analysis of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services" according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

The discipline was renamed in the late 19th century primarily due to Alfred Marshall from "political economy" to "economics" as a shorter term for "economic science" at a time when it became more open to rigorous thinking and made increased use of mathematics, which helped support efforts to have it accepted as a science and as a separate discipline outside of political science and other social sciences.

Philosophy (from Greek, philosophia, literally "love of wisdom") is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.

The term was probably coined by Pythagoras (c.

570 – c.

495 BC).

Philosophical methods include questioning, critical discussion, rational argument and systematic presentation.

Classic philosophical questions include: Is it possible to know anything and to prove it? What is most real? However, philosophers might also pose more practical and concrete questions such as: Is there a best way to live? Is it better to be just or unjust (if one can get away with it)? Do humans have free will?.

One view is that a free market is a system in which the prices for goods and services are determined by the open market and consumers, in which the laws and forces of supply and demand are free from any intervention by a government, price-setting monopoly, or other authority.

Another view considers systems with significant market power, inequality of bargaining power, or information asymmetry to be less than free.

Politics (from Greek Politiká: Politika, definition "affairs of the cities") is the process of making decisions applying to all members of each group.

More narrowly, it refers to achieving and exercising positions of governance — organized control over a human community, particularly a state.

Furthermore, politics is the study or practice of the distribution of power and resources within a given community (this is usually a hierarchically organized population) as well as the interrelationship(s) between communities.

History (from Greek, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the past as it is described in written documents.

Events occurring before written record are considered prehistory.

It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events.

Scholars who write about history are called historians.
