Semantic Scholar is a project developed at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, released in November 2015.

It is designed to be a "smart" search service for journal articles.

The project uses a combination of machine learning, natural language processing, machine vision to add a layer of semantic analysis to the traditional methods of citation analysis.

In comparison to Google Scholar and PubMed, it is designed to quickly highlight the most important papers and identify the connections between them.

The Semantic Web is an extension of the Web through standards by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

The standards promote common data formats and exchange protocols on the Web, most fundamentally the Resource Description Framework (RDF).

Research comprises "creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications." Engineering is the application of mathematics and scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, processes, solutions, and organizations.
