Transparency International e.V.

(TI) is an international non-governmental organization which is based in Berlin, Germany, and was founded in 1993.

Its nonprofit purpose is to take action to combat corruption and prevent criminal activities arising from corruption.

It publishes for example the Global Corruption Barometer and the Corruption Perceptions Index.

Transparency International has the legal status of a German registered voluntary association (Eingetragener Verein) and serves as an umbrella organization.

Its members are besides a few individuals more than 100 national chapters which engage in fighting corruption in their home countries.

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a not-for-profit organization that is independent from states and international governmental organizations.

They are usually funded by donations but some avoid formal funding altogether and are run primarily by volunteers.

NGOs are highly diverse groups of organizations engaged in a wide range of activities, and take different forms in different parts of the world.

Some may have charitable status, while others may be registered for tax exemption based on recognition of social purposes.

Others may be fronts for political, religious, or other interests.

Civil society is the "aggregate of non-governmental organizations and institutions that manifest interests and will of citizens".

Civil society includes the family and the private sphere, referred to as the "third sector" of society, distinct from government and business.

By other authors, "civil society" is used in the sense of 1) the aggregate of non-governmental organizations and institutions that manifest interests and will of citizens or 2) individuals and organizations in a society which are independent of the government.

Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement, though it may also involve practices that are legal in many countries.

Government, or 'political', corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for personal gain.

A coalition is a pact or treaty among individuals or groups, during which they cooperate in joint action, each in their own self-interest, joining forces together for a common cause.

This alliance may be temporary or a matter of convenience.

A coalition thus differs from a more formal covenant.

Possibly described as a joining of 'factions', usually those with overlapping interests rather than opposing.
