The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a measurement standards laboratory, and a non-regulatory agency of the United States Department of Commerce.

Its mission is to promote innovation and industrial competitiveness.

Quality of life (QOL) is the general well-being of individuals and societies, outlining negative and positive features of life.

It observes life satisfaction, including everything from physical health, family, education, employment, wealth, religious beliefs, finance and the environment.

This came through many successive rapid advances in technology, such as the production of steel and coal.

Competitiveness pertains to the ability and performance of a firm, sub-sector or country to sell and supply goods and services in a given market, in relation to the ability and performance of other firms, sub-sectors or countries in the same market.
